Martin Karp

Chief of Staff to the Head of Schools

Dr. Martin Stewart Karp has always believed that meaningful change requires participation, responsibility, and a willingness to lead from within. For more than three decades, he has dedicated his professional life to education, working directly with students, teachers, administrators, and policymakers to strengthen learning environments and expand opportunity. His career reflects a consistent belief that schools shape lives and that thoughtful leadership can create lasting impact when grounded in children's real needs.

From the classroom to districtwide leadership, Dr. Karp’s work has been guided by a simple principle: education works best when it meets students where they are and helps them grow toward their full potential. That philosophy has informed his decisions as a teacher, school leader, policymaker, and mentor across a wide range of educational settings.

Academic Preparation and Professional Foundation

Dr. Martin Karp earned his academic degrees at the University of Miami, where he completed a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. He also holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing. These credentials provided him with both pedagogical insight and a strong understanding of organizational leadership, communication, and strategic planning.

In addition, he completed a master’s program at Syracuse University, earning a degree from the Newhouse School of Public Communications through a combined M.S. and M.B.A. program. This interdisciplinary training strengthened his ability to communicate complex ideas, manage large systems, and engage diverse audiences, skills that would later become essential in both education and public service.

Early Teaching and Innovative Classroom Work

Dr. Karp began his career as a classroom teacher, where his creativity and student-centered approach quickly became evident. At Biscayne Elementary School, he designed and launched a gifted education program that brought together students from both public and private schools. This initiative was among the first of its kind in the district and demonstrated his ability to break down traditional barriers in favor of enriched learning experiences.

He also served as an Exceptional Student Education specialist and department chairperson, developing student fairs and public showcases that highlighted the abilities and achievements of students receiving special education services. His work emphasized inclusion, dignity, and the belief that all students deserve meaningful opportunities to learn and be recognized.

Blending Education and Media

In addition to his work in schools, Dr. Karp has a strong background in media and publishing. He served as Business Manager for Southern Playbill Publishing and as Circulation Director for Miami Beach Magazine, gaining valuable experience in operations, content strategy, and audience engagement.

His interest in educational media led him to design a longitudinal broadcast programming schedule and to produce WKDZ Kids’ World. This weekly educational television show aired on Cable TAP and WLRN TV Channel 17. The program showcased students, classroom projects, and hands-on learning activities, bringing positive stories about education into the broader community.

Leadership at the District Level

From 2004 to 2020, Dr. Karp served four consecutive terms on the Miami-Dade County School Board. During his tenure, he became known for his practical, student-focused approach to policymaking and his willingness to tackle complex issues with clarity and resolve.

His initiatives included advocating for later high school start times, promoting healthier school environments, expanding gifted and science education programs, increasing services for students with disabilities, and implementing vaping education and prevention efforts. He consistently prioritized policies that improved student well-being and long-term academic success.

Dr. Karp also served multiple terms as Vice Chair of the School Board, reflecting the trust and respect he earned from colleagues across the district.

Leadership Focused on Individual Growth

Dr. Martin Karp currently serves as Chief of Staff to the Head of Schools for a consortium of schools affiliated with Talmudic University. In this role, he oversees contracts, leads strategic planning, manages meetings, and supports dozens of academic divisions across elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.

One of his most impactful initiatives has been the creation of the Success Center at Yeshiva Elementary School. Designed for students who thrive outside traditional classroom models, the program combines foundational academic skills with STEM projects, enrichment activities, and guest speakers. The goal is to ensure that every child has a pathway to success that aligns with their strengths and interests.

He also introduced new assessment tools and individualized learning plans that allow educators to track progress while honoring each student’s unique learning profile.

Commitment to Service Beyond Education

Dr. Karp’s dedication to service extends far beyond school walls. Since 1995, he has volunteered with Miami-Dade Animal Services and the Humane Society, supporting the H.O.P.E. Contest, a student-focused initiative that raises awareness about animal welfare and responsible care.

He has also been active in Scouting USA since the 1980s, serving in leadership roles including Assistant Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, and Advancement Chairman. His involvement reflects a lifelong commitment to character development and civic responsibility.

For more than 16 years, Dr. Karp has served on the WLRN Community Advisory Board, contributing to public broadcasting efforts and reviewing educational materials related to award-winning documentaries.
